Day 17, Franschhoek to Johannesburg

Today we leave the food and wine capital of South Africa, and head to Johannesburg as a stop over en route to Tanzania.

After another wonderful breakfast, we met our driver and headed to the Cape Town Airport, about an hour’s drive away.

The sun decided to shine today, and it was a fine drive through the Towns of Franschhoek and Stellanboch on our way to the airport.

Some of the vineyards on the way out of town. You can see the hills that surround Franschhoek and nestle the vineyards in a wonderful fertile cradle.

Typical settlements on t he outskirts of the towns

As we neared the airport we drove by the second largest township in South Africa and the largest in Cape Town, called Khayelitsha.

A patchwork quilt of small homes built of corrugated metal.

It was no time before we were let off at the airport and checked in for our flight. All pretty easy and straight forward. Time to load onto the plane and set off for our next brief adventure in Johannesburg.

Looks like Table Mountain finally came out to say goodbye!
Here you can see Signal Hill (on the right) and Lion’s Head to its left. Our hotel in Camps Bay was just behind Signal Hill.

It took a couple of hours flying time to reach Johannesburg flying in a Canadian CRJ jet!

We were met at the airport and made it to our hotel, Pablo House, set in the Melville area of the city.

We went to the restaurant in our hotel and had a lovely dinner. Tonight we are getting ready to fly to Tanzania tomorrow. It will be a long day leaving here at 10:15 am for the airport. We’ll then take a flight to Daar es Salam. Then from there board another flight to Arusha, which is at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro. Hopefully we’ll be in our hotel by midnight!

I may not post tomorrow, but will try to update when I can while on Safari. Talk soon!
