Day 44, Isle of Skye to the Isle of Bute

We started out very early today as we all had long treks ahead of us. Glenn and Gwen drove us to the airport in Glasgow from our B and B near Portree and then they went on to Ripon for the night.

When Glenn and Gwen dropped us off we rented a car and headed to Wemyss Bay to take the ferry to the Isle of Bute. But I digress… the night before we left, I was able to get this one sunset shot. We haven’t had many opportunities as the sun has been going down so late, and we generally have early morning starts. This evening was an exception!

A bit of distortion from the window, but a lovely sky over Portree was seen.

The topography of Skye was hilly and progressed into more highlands as we drove south and east towards the bridge at the Kyle of Lochalsh.

Grey skies over Skye, but the gorse was out in full force!
Crossing off of Skye. We’ll definitely have to come back here some day and do the hikes that we had planned!
Looking across the Cullen Sound as we head south.
An old castle ruin on the River Elchaig near Donnie. This is said to have been used in the filming of Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Looking into the highlands from Fort William
Passing through some beautiful hiking country near Glencoe

It seemed like no time and we were pulling up to the car rental place at the airport. We said quick goodbyes, as we all still had hours of travel ahead of us. Dan and I got our car and headed off towards the Isle of Bute.

Coming out of the airport at Glasgow, we headed west towards our ferry at Wemyss Bay. Below you can see the port town of Greenoch sitting by the inner sea of the Firth of Clyde.

We soon arrived at Wemyss Bay and got into the line for the ferry. These run hourly and there is no pre booking. We were just glad to get into the lot with several ferries left for the day!

Well, our luck was starting to turn. We though we would have to wait for the next ferry (no big thing) but low and behold, they had room for one more car! Yes, we slipped right in between those two cars where the young man was beckoning!

You know its tight when they’re closing the door on your back bumper!
Our first view of Rothesay. Here you can see the influence of “Victorian Tourism” as this was quite the popular spot for vacationing away from the maddening cities.
Our palace for the next 3 nights!
And this is the view from our window!
A cozy little Glamping Pod. Here I’m trying to put together a pot of Cullen Skink for our dinner. A quick bowl of soup and then a wee explore before bed!
The sun is setting, and so must we! It’s been a long day!

Well, we made it to our little oasis on Bute. Time enough to make plans. For now, we just need to get settled in and get a good night’s rest! Until tomorrow!
